After service in the Navy, Earl attended the Art Students’ League of New York during the 1970s. Since 1981, he has made his home on the Connecticut Shoreline, where he was active in the arts community over two decades. During this time, his works in acrylics, watercolor, pen-and-ink, and graphite appeared in many exhibitions as well as publications, including feature articles in The Artist’s Magazine and books such as Splash 3 (North Light Publishing, 1994), showcasing “105 of America’s Best Contemporary Watercolorists,” and he was the author of The North Light Book of Acrylic Painting Techniques (1995).

In addition, Earl contributed to the community by donating art work for fundraising to benefit organizations such as SARAH, The Shoreline Arts Alliance, Gateway Communities, ARTSPACE, and the New Haven Arts Council. He lent his talents and energies to the then-fledgling Shoreline Arts Alliance, through which he initiated the Future Choices Annual Juried Show for regional high school students, now in its fourth decade, and sponsored the Best in Show award for twelve years.
Personal circumstances led to a long hiatus in Earl’s involvement with the arts. His revival began in 2017 with his re-connection to the Shoreline Arts Alliance. Acting on his lifelong wish to encourage and support young people in their artistic pursuits, he established an annual Founder’s Award for Future Choices, to be given to the teacher of the student who receives the Best in Show award and shared with another student of that teacher’s choosing. Earl also rekindled his commitment to painting and, within ten months, completed a series of over forty new watercolors.
